Microsoft hires former Apple engineering VP to lead hardware efforts

Microsoft has hired former Apple engineering executive Rubén Caballero to work on hardware design and technology.
As seen on Caballero’s LinkedIn (and first spotted by Bloomberg), the former Apple veteran joined Microsoft just last month as Corporate VP of Engineering working on Mixed Reality and AI projects including HoloLens and “special projects.”
Caballero joined Apple in 2005 and has worked on numerous Apple products including the first designs of the iPhone and iPad. One of the founding leaders of the iPhone hardware team, he founded and led wireless design and technology group during his 14-year career at Apple.
Caballero was reportedly leading Apple’s 5G efforts, which would fit into the 2020 iPhone models, until January 2019, a month before Apple hired Johny Srouji from Intel to lead its custom chip division. He left Apple in April 2019.
