On the Browse tab in the Music app, Apple has started displaying a special announcement teaser. Apple might announce a new lossless audio tier for its music subscription service alongside new AirPods.
On Sunday, as noted by 9to5Mac, Apple Music updated its web app with the headline “Get ready – music is about to change forever” that also said “coming soon.” Furthermore, the source code of the web app has references to “Lossless” and “Hi-Res Lossless,” hinting toward lossless audio support for Apple Music.
Lossless audio formats retain all of the sound data which leads to no loss in overall quality of the audio. These formats use compression algorithms that preserve audio quality so the audio is exactly the same as the original.
Due to the high-quality reproduction of sound, HiFi tiers are quite popular among music streaming services. In fact, services like Deezer and Tidal already offer HiFi tiers to their customers. Spotify is also working on a higher quality tier which is expected to arrive sometime this year.
Apple is yet to officially make an announcement. Stay tuned!
