Apple has announced the new MacBook Air lineup featuring the M3 chip in 13-inch and 15-inch form factors. The updated MacBook Air models bring a spec bump and are now available to order, with shipping starting March 8.

Apple says the new MacBook Air is up to 60 percent faster than the M1 lineup and up to 13x faster than the fastest Intel-based MacBook Air. The company is calling the M3 MacBook Air “the world’s best consumer laptop for AI,” thanks to a faster and more efficient Neural Engine on the M3. In addition to faster CPU and GPU performance, the M3 MacBook Air delivers WiFi download speeds that are up to twice as fast as the previous generation MacBook Air, thanks to WiFi 6E.

The MacBook Air with M3 supports up to two external displays (6K and 5K at 60Hz) but with the laptop lid closed. If the lid is open and the Air’s screen is active, then there’s only one active external display. While this is a progression from the M1 and M2 models, the Intel-based MacBook Air allowed using the laptop’s screen with two external displays connected.

The design remains unchanged from the previous generation, with thin bezels, a notch cutout, and flat-edged chassis. The 13-inch and 15-inch M3 MacBook Air models are available in midnight, starlight, space gray, and silver color choices. The midnight finish comes with an anodization seal to reduce fingerprints.

The newest MacBook Air starts at $1,099 for the 13-inch variant and at $1,299 for the 15-inch variant. With the M3 chip on Air, Apple has slashed the price of the MacBook Air with M2 to $999, following the discontinuation of the M1 MacBook Air.
